The lowering ring is what lets you service luminaires at ground level instead of hiring a crane every time a lamp needs attention. Choosing between manual and motorized comes down to pole height, luminaire count, and how often you expect to service the fixtures.
A ring carrying the luminaires travels up and down the pole shaft on a wire rope, guided by rollers, and is winched to the top for operation and lowered to a safe working height (typically 1–1.5m above ground) for maintenance. A locking mechanism holds the ring securely at the top during normal operation, engineered against wind and vibration loads.
A hand-cranked winch is simpler, lower-cost, and has fewer components to maintain — suitable for poles with 4–8 fixtures that are serviced relatively infrequently. The trade-off is more physical effort and time per maintenance visit, especially on taller poles.
An electric winch with a geared drive lowers and raises the ring at the push of a button, making sense for taller poles (30m+), higher fixture counts (8–16), or sites where maintenance needs to happen quickly and often, such as high-traffic ports and stadiums.
Every winch system we supply includes a self-locking gearbox (the ring cannot free-fall even if the winch handle or motor fails) plus a secondary mechanical lock at the top position — this brake redundancy is a critical safety feature, not an optional extra, given the loads and heights involved.
Can an existing manual lowering system be upgraded to motorized?
In many cases yes, if the pole and ring structure can accommodate the motor housing and additional wiring. We assess this during a site inspection before quoting the upgrade.
How often does the lowering ring mechanism need servicing?
We recommend inspecting the wire rope, pulleys, and winch brake at every AMC visit (quarterly or half-yearly), since wear on these components is what leads to jamming or, in the worst case, failure to lock at the top.
